Workers’ Compensation
Workers' compensation is a no-fault insurance program that provides medical care and partial wage replacement for employees who experience a work-related injury or illness. University of Idaho's workers' compensation program is administered by CorVel.
Employees, including student paid employees and student interns, who experience a work-related injury or illness should immediately seek appropriate medical attention. An injury that requires professional medical treatment or lost time from work will be classified as an accident. An injury or an illness that does not require professional medical treatment or lost time from work will be classified as an incident.
Employees, student paid employees, and student interns (site accident) injured at work have a right to file a workers compensation claim. It is extremely important that a claim is filed with CorVel for any accident where the employee has sought medical attention. Employees are also encouraged to call CorVel to report an incident even if medical attention is not necessary at the time of report.
- Employees needing emergency care are directed to call 911 or use any emergency room.
- If medical care is sought, inform provider of workers’ compensation claim to avoid billing personal insurance.
- Follow up care must be coordinated through CorVel and the designated providers program.
- Notify your supervisor of the incident.
- Report accident/incident to CorVel at 844-213-2099.
Obtaining care
Employees needing emergency care may use any emergency room.
Follow-up care must be done through the designated providers' program. For follow-up care, start a claim with CorVel to be directed to the appropriate designated provider.
Starting a claim
If you are injured at work, whether you intend to seek medical care or not, file with CorVel within 48 hours of the event by calling CorVel at 844-213-2099. Quick reporting will help you comply with Idaho law regarding workers compensation and assist with the accident investigation efforts to mitigate the root cause of the accident.
CorVel will notify Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) directly, and then EHS will contact you to discuss how the accident occurred and look for ways to prevent additional injuries.
CorVel manages all aspects of your claim, including claim details, medical care coordination, billing, etc. Questions regarding your claim should be directed to the claims adjuster.
CorVel
University of Idaho is self-insured for workers’ compensation and has hired CorVel, a claims management company, to assist with workers’ compensation claims. CorVel assists employees with management of their claim and makes workers compensation payments for medical care and lost time.
When you file a claim, you will be contacted by a CorVel adjustor to help you with your workers’ compensation claim. If you have any questions about your workers’ compensation claim, contact the claims adjustor. Please be sure to keep scheduled medical appointments and cooperate with others to help you through your claim. If needed, your claims adjustor will assign a nurse claims manager.
CorVel is your primary contact for your workers’ compensation claim, and will answer questions regarding your specific case, workers’ compensation care, and billing questions.
The CorVel contact number is 844-213-2099.
Reporting time away from work
When reporting time loss due to a workers’ compensation eligible injury, please consult with Benefit Services as various rules apply to the use of accumulated leave in coordination with workers’ compensation wage replacement benefits. Coordination helps ensure your leave and payments are processed correctly.
University Benefit Services Office
Benefit Services can assist with other benefits, such as Family Medical Leave, and is the office you will coordinate with regarding medical notes, doctor releases, etc., as it relates to the employment aspect of the injury. Do not provide this information to your supervisor or department. If you can return to work for “light duties,” the university will look for opportunities for you. Please discuss any issues or concerns with these professionals.
Idaho Industrial Commission (IIC)
The IIC may also assist with vocational rehabilitation professionals. You’re encouraged to read information about the Idaho workers’ compensation claims process and regulations. Learn more about the claims process and your rights through the Idaho Industrial Commission’s “Facts for Injured Workers” publication and FAQs.
U of I Risk Management responsibilities
U of I Risk Management is responsible for oversight of the university workers’ compensation program. U of I Risk can assist with general questions about the university’s program but cannot answer questions about your specific claim.

Designated providers program
University of Idaho established a designated providers program through CorVel for workers’ compensation cases that occur in Idaho. Employees who have a workers’ compensation claim must first contact CorVel who will direct them to an approved designated provider for follow-up treatment. The intent of the designated providers program is to strengthen the workers’ compensation benefit for our employees. Designated providers will help employees make safe, strong recoveries from accidents, and provide appropriate referrals as needed. Employees needing emergency care due to a workers’ compensation injury can go to any emergency care facility. The designated providers will apply only to follow up care for a workers’ compensation injury.
For follow-up care, university employees MUST use one of the designated providers on the list below as assigned by CorVel. Employees who cannot access one of these designated providers should discuss their concerns with the CorVel adjuster. If employees use a provider that is not designated, workers’ compensation benefits can be stopped. Appropriate mileage will be included for the employee. Employees should communicate any concerns about claims or medical treatment to CorVel prior to contacting a designated provider, and any general issues to U of I Risk Management.
