The Operation Education Scholarship allowed me to follow my plan to gain an MFA in writing. I am a high school teacher by profession and I believe that the more content skills and expertise we can bring to our students, particularly at the high school level, will make for more aware and thoughtful students of life. After the Marines, I struggled with a way of telling my own story and capturing the direction that my personal narrative was taking, and my degree and support from Operation Education helped me understand and hone the skills I have to not only write about my narrative, but allow me to help other veterans by working with them so they may capture and control their own stories in a way that can encourage skills to combat PTSD and the difficulties that come from separation from service.
