Ethan Tomczyk, a senior and Midshipman 1st Class at the University of Idaho, carries a legacy of service as a fourth-generation American servicemember. Hailing from Kellogg, Idaho, Ethan has charted his course in the military, driven by a profound sense of patriotism instilled in him from a young age and a love for adventure and the great outdoors.

Ethan's household was steeped in stories of service and camaraderie growing up. His father's tales of life aboard a Navy destroyer and the lifelong friendships forged in those times left a lasting impression on him. For Ethan, joining the military was more than just a rite of passage; it was a conscious decision to serve his country, uphold its values and be part of a community. The Navy stood out as the perfect branch to fulfill his sense of duty.

Ethan's journey towards a commission was influenced by the outstanding leaders he encountered throughout his life — in classrooms, on the football field and within his community. Many of these mentors were former officers in the armed forces who underscored the importance of leadership in every sphere of life. Inspired by their impact on him and his desire to help others succeed, Ethan set his sights on becoming an officer, ready to lead and make a difference.

Choosing to major in Physical Geology was a natural fit for Ethan, given his deep-rooted love for nature and the outdoors. Growing up amidst the lush landscapes of Idaho's Panhandle, he saw geology as a way to stay close to nature while pursuing his academic goals. Over the years, his understanding of the field has deepened, revealing geologists' significant role in environmental stewardship and how they contribute to our understanding of the world.

U of I's proximity to home and its access to various outdoor activities made it the ideal choice for Ethan. Preferring the tranquility of smaller settings to the hustle and bustle of city life, he found a sense of belonging on the university's welcoming campus, surrounded by fellow outdoor enthusiasts and like-minded individuals.

Ethan is an avid adventurer, immersing himself in hiking, camping, fishing and skiing whenever possible. His love for the outdoors is a constant in his life, providing him joy, relaxation and a connection to nature.

College has been a transformative experience for Ethan, teaching him invaluable lessons about adulthood, responsibility and the power of friendships. The support of roommates, classmates and teammates has been critical, highlighting the importance of building strong relationships and taking time to unwind and enjoy the journey.
