The Vandal Gateway Program (VGP) helps you transition into college life at University of Idaho through a structured, supportive learning environment. As part of a one-year cohort, you’ll receive personalized academic support, mentorship and leadership development to build confidence, advance essential skills and lay the foundation for long-term success.
With small class sizes, one-on-one advising and tailored resources, VGP gives you the tools to navigate college and thrive — academically and personally.

Admissions requirements
The Vandal Gateway Program is designed for students who fall just below University of Idaho’s standard admission criteria and would benefit from a more structured, supportive transition into college life. VGP students begin their academic journey as General Studies majors. If you remain in good academic standing, you’ll have the opportunity to declare a different major starting in your second semester.
As part of the program, you’ll take two to three cohort-based courses each semester alongside other Gateway students. You’ll also have the flexibility to enroll in courses related to your intended major or that fulfill General Education requirements (courses required for all majors at U of I).

Fall semester:
- English 101
- Cultural Anthropology
- Two-credit College Success course
Spring semester:
- English 102
- Communication 101
- One-credit Career Exploration course

Through VGP, you’ll receive a strong academic foundation and opportunities to succeed.

First-year seminar course
VGP includes a first-year seminar course designed to equip you with essential college success skills. You’ll learn time management and study strategies, sharpen your critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and get acquainted with university resources and academic expectations.

- Schedule your Gateway advising meeting: In this one-on-one session, you’ll register for classes, review your academic plan and sign up for a “Meet Your Cohort” event.
- Stay on track: Be sure to review the Admitted Student To-Do List to complete your enrollment steps and prepare for the semester ahead.
