Nontraditional students
What is a Nontraditional Student?
Are you an incoming University of Idaho undergraduate student who is:
- Older than 23
- A parent
- Married
- Attending U of I after taking a break before or during your university education
- The primary caregiver of elderly parents
- A veteran of the US armed forces
If so, you belong to a significant segment of our student population. An estimated 20-40 percent of our undergraduate students are non-traditional learners.
Almost all nontraditional students are pursuing their education on top of demands outside the classroom. Many of our students are raising children, working while in college, serving in the military and taking care of family.
University of Idaho is committed to working with these students to ensure success in their academic and personal careers. U of I provides a range of services designed to meet your needs.
Where would I live?
On-campus apartments are available for nontraditional students, including family units. These apartments are currently being renovated to improve the experience.
Off-campus apartments are also available. Explore your options with the rental search tool.
What if I can't move to Moscow right now?
Explore online degree options. As the number one online college in Idaho, U of I has a wide range of flexible programs you can complete from anywhere.
How do I apply?
Find your student type and apply on the admissions page.
How will I get around campus?

What will I eat?
Moscow has a wide range of food options, from affordable grocery stores to locally owned downtown restaurants. On campus, you can buy a meal plan for all-you-care-to-enjoy dining at The Eatery at Vandal Village or purchase meals as you go. A campus food pantry is also available for times of need.
