Non-degree seeking admission is for students who want to take University of Idaho courses without pursuing a degree. Learn about eligibility, application requirements and the steps to enroll in courses offered online or on campus.

Who is considered a non-degree seeking student?
You are considered a non-degree seeking student if you want to take University of Idaho courses without pursuing a bachelor's or graduate degree. Non-degree seeking students may enroll in individual courses to explore an area of interest, meet educational goals or support professional development.
You may be a non-degree seeking student if you are:
- Auditing a course
- Taking a course for professional development
- Taking a course that is not offered at your current institution
If you are a former U of I undergraduate degree-seeking student and have not previously enrolled as a non-degree seeking student, you will need to submit a new non-degree application for admission.

Non-degree seeking student admission requirements
To be admitted as a non-degree seeking student, you must:
- Submit an application for admission.
- Be a high school graduate or have completed the GED.
- If you have not yet graduated from high school or obtained a GED, you may be admitted through U of I’s high school dual credit program.
- Provide a valid government-issued photo identification.
In addition to the requirements above, you should:
- Understand that acceptance in this category does not constitute acceptance to a degree-granting program.
- Have sufficient educational background to qualify for the course or courses in which enrollment is sought.
- Accept personal responsibility for the applicability of credits earned while registered in this category.
- Understand that students in this non-degree category cannot be considered for federal or state financial aid.
Non-degree seeking student restrictions
A non-degree student may register for no more than seven credits each semester and may complete a maximum of 32 semester credits at University of Idaho. Upon completion of 32 semester credits, the student must either be admitted as a degree-seeking student at University of Idaho or submit a letter of appeal to continue as a non-degree student. Any deviations from the admission policy or credit limits need the approval of the Director of Admissions and/or the Admissions Committee.
- Instructor permission is required to enroll in 5000-6000 level courses.
- Permission of the Dean of the College of Law is required to enroll in 8000-9999 level courses.
Non-degree seeking student application process
Create your application account
Create a new account or log in to an existing account. Use a personal email address rather than a school or work email address to ensure you have continued access to your application information.
Start your application
Select the undergraduate application and begin completing your non-degree seeking student application.
Provide required application information
The U of I non-degree seeking student application includes the following sections:
- Personal and background information: Provide your name, address, contact information and other biographical or citizenship information. Be sure to provide any previous names you may have been enrolled under so we can locate your existing information.
- Enrollment information: Share details about your intended program/courses of study, student type, preferred campus, planned start term and any SAT/ACT information. This is where you will select “new non-degree seeking student” from the “I am a:” drop-down menu.
- Academic history: List the high schools or colleges you have attended, dates of attendance and any degrees or college credits earned.
- Additional information: Provide information such as state residency and background details. This information helps U of I identify programs, resources and services that may support your student experience.
- Application signature: Confirm that the information submitted is accurate and complete.
Submit your application fee
Pay the $50 application fee when you submit your application.
A fee waiver option is available. Information about requesting a fee waiver is provided during the U of I application process.
Check your application status
After submitting your application, return to your applicant portal to monitor your application status, review any requested materials and view admission updates.
