University of Idaho new Seed Potato Germplasm Laboratory. This new laboratory allows the University to address the increased demand for potato plantlets and mni-tubers.

Innovating at the intersection of biology and technology

Care about the environment, health, food or energy? Biological engineering puts you at the center of solving real-world challenges that matter. We call it the four essences of life: exuberance, environment, edibles and energy. As a biological engineer, you’ll be part of this relatively new and exciting field that blends science and technology with hands-on experience. You’ll work on everything from sustainable agriculture and clean energy to cutting-edge biotechnology, biomedical and environmental solutions.

With a Master of Engineering in biological engineering, you’ll gain expertise in advanced methods and tools to:

  • Improve environmental quality
  • Design and manufacture medical devices
  • Fabricate biomaterials for medical and pharmaceutical applications
  • Develop solutions for sustainable agriculture and energy
  • Design equipment to harvest and process food
  • Create new ways to produce alternative energy from biological feedstocks
