A portrait of Layla Knight

This new academic year is about getting out there, making new friends and joining in some of the many experiences that the University of Idaho offers. I love this school: I love its heart, its sense of community and how our students and faculty are always pushing forward and finding the best in things. Now that I am in my second year, I am increasingly finding my place and encountering many more familiar faces.

A true highlight was the opportunity to study abroad. This past summer, I joined a group of political science students on a month-long visit to Germany. It was an amazing experience, and I am so glad I had the chance to travel, learn about politics and government overseas, and step outside my comfort zone.

I am a competing member and newly elected vice president of the university’s Rodeo Club. The sport of rodeo has always been my passion. I am so lucky to be able to board my horse, Strut, just 10 minutes from campus. Last year, Strut and I were the only freshman team to qualify for the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Finals in barrel racing. I'm so excited about our season resuming this fall!

With my major in political science and a minor in agriculture communications and leadership, I plan to go on to law school here at U of I. As someone born and raised in the West, I embody the region's hard-working, independent spirit and know firsthand how important our agriculture is to the world. I want to help people better understand the relevance of our industries, values and traditions.

Since becoming a member of the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association last year, I've been working to increase the visibility, funding and membership of our collegiate program and rodeo more broadly. My lifestyle and career plans go hand in hand. With my passion for rodeo and for our western region's agricultural roots, I hope to one day serve as an advocate and lobbyist for agriculture in the Northwest.

I am grateful to every donor who supports learning at U of I.

I've been fortunate to earn scholarships that have made a significant difference in my education. Without awards like the National High School Rodeo Foundation, the Northwest Youth Rodeo Association, the Oregon Community Foundation and the Vandal Adventure Fund, I would never have had the incredible opportunity to attend college out of state, as well as travel and study abroad. I am grateful to every donor who supports learning at U of I. Thank you!

“Studying abroad was the best decision I've ever made. I gained invaluable life experiences, enhanced my understanding of my coursework and degrees, and clarified my career goals. I could not have managed it without scholarship support.”

“As an International Studies major, I got to spend part of one summer studying Spanish in Barcelona, Spain! I felt very lucky to be a recipient of my scholarship, for it made my lifelong goal to study abroad a reality.”

“Each year I worked to help pay my way. Scholarships allowed me to focus more on my studies and to obtain the professional equipment I would need to reach my career goals. Without them, I would not have been able to attend the University of Idaho.”
