What are you hyped about this week, Vandals?
Movement sciences senior has a lot to cheer about 📣🎓

Having suffered multiple injuries during her cheer career, Gracie McClendon, @gracelynhopee, decided that the team needed to tweak their training to help them stay healthy.

As a senior majoring in movement sciences, she knew that strength training and understanding biomechanics in cheerleading, and how that led to safely and effectively performing routines like building human pyramids, was the best way to keep her teammates off the injured list.

As this year’s team captain, she gave herself the assignment to provide that instruction while continuing to build on the program’s success established in national competitions during the past two years.

Through captaining the team and her educational program, she also confirmed her career goals — she wanted to help people stay healthy.

After the Fall ’25 semester, McClendon became a certified personal trainer through the National Academy of Sports Medicine. During the Spring ’26 semester, she began teaching an Intro to Fitness class at SRC, which is funded by a grant through the Center of Biomedical Research Excellence in Nutrition and Women’s Health.

McClendon, who is applying for occupational therapy graduate programs, is also personalizing workouts for her teammates.

With McLendon's training, focused on strengthening muscles that allow them to handle high-impact routines, the U of I Spirit Squad recently took first place in the College Game Day Fight Song category.

As a Vandal, she’s not only back doing what she loves, she’s channeling that experience into her future career goals, with a passion for helping others recover, grow and stay strong.

Grad Story: From farm fields to forest floors 🌲🎓

Meet Ryann Harrington, a University of Idaho senior whose journey started in Washington agriculture and led her to a future in forestry and wildfire ecology.

What began as a trip to a national farm expo turned into a passion for protecting forests, managing fire and leading others along the way. Now, she’s graduating with hands-on experience in everything from mapping timber to working on fire management crews, and already has a role lined up with the Idaho Department of Lands.

“I just love being outside… hiking around with my tools and equipment and getting the job done," she said.

Through leadership, fieldwork and community, Ryann found her path and proved that sometimes the best journeys start where you least expect them.
