Message from the dean

Welcome to the College of Science. If you are alumni or a friend of the college, you're in good company. We have a legacy of producing leaders in academia, business and industry.

If you're a high school student thinking about a major, consider this: Graduates with a degree in a STEM field tend to earn 26% more than those with a degree in a non-STEM discipline. And it’s not only salary potential—STEM careers are expected to grow at a faster rate than other occupations.

As you think about where to get a STEM degree, keep in mind that the College of Science at University of Idaho offers world-class opportunities for undergraduates to get involved in research. We’re a Carnegie R1 research university with a faculty of outstanding research scientists – but we’re not too big. At UIdaho, you will get to know your professors and have an opportunity to work alongside them. That research experience can be the difference that sets you apart when you enter the job market.

If you are considering graduate studies in a science field, consider our distinct interdisciplinary options and nationally ranked programs. For example, we have an interdisciplinary group of biologists, mathematicians and statisticians conducting state of the art genomics research. We have chemists, physicists and biologists developing nanowires as sensors for explosives and as new approaches for drug delivery. We have geographers studying the potential effects of climate variability on regional water supplies. We have geologists investigating an array of geologic hazards such as volcanic eruptions and earthquakes. You’ll find an exciting array of options to study at University of Idaho.
