Located inside the Student Recreation Center (SRC), the U of I Climbing Center features a 55-foot climbing pillar, 24-foot instructional wall, a bouldering cave and a variety of climbing routes — offering more than 6,000 square feet of indoor climbing fun.

The Climbing Center is open year-round for recreation and instruction. We offer:

  • Open climb sessions
  • Beginner and advanced climbing classes
  • Bouldering, top-rope, lead and multi-pitch climbing areas
  • Rappelling instruction
  • Rental equipment including shoes and harnesses

The Climbing Center is also available for private group rentals and special instruction.

Student Recreation Center closures may impact Climbing Center hours. Check the schedule to stay up to date on upcoming closures.

U of I Climbing Center access

The Climbing Center is open to the public, in addition to U of I students, and is  

included in your SRC membership. Youth under 18 may climb with a youth pass and adult supervision.

All patrons must have a valid VandalCard to get an SRC Membership. VandalCards can be purchased at the SRC Information Desk for $10. Memberships are non-transferable and non-refundable.

Rent climbing shoes, harnesses and other essential gear right at the Climbing Center — everything you need to get started.

Climbing rules and safety

All climbers must complete an annual skills check, which includes:

  • Tying a figure-eight follow-through knot.
  • Using a manual braking belay device.
  • Using proper belay commands.

If you’re unable to demonstrate all skills, you’ll need to complete a Basics Clinic before climbing.

A Climbing Center Release of Liability Form must also be completed at the front desk.

Shoe and harness rentals are available for an additional fee. 

Climbing Center FAQs

What should I wear for climbing?

Whatever is comfortable and does not have offensive slogans, images or content. Shirts must always be worn.

Do I have to wear a helmet to climb?

You are not required to wear a helmet, but helmets are available to rent for free at the Climbing Center.

Do I have to wear climbing shoes to climb?

You do not have to wear specific climbing shoes, but non-marking athletic shoes are recommended if you are not using climbing shoes. Close-toed shoes are required at all times.

Can I use loose chalk during a climb?

The U of I Climbing Center is a “No Loose Chalk” facility, so we ask that patrons refrain from using loose chalk during their visits.

Why can’t I use loose chalk?

Open chalk is not allowed to maintain the HVAC system and cleaning requirements in the facility.

I’ve never climbed before. Can someone teach me?

Yes, check out our schedule to see upcoming clinics. Private instruction is also available upon request at a cost of $50 per hour with a minimum of 48-hour notice and a maximum of two participants.

Can I scream and swear while climbing?

No. Screaming and swearing are not tolerated in the Climbing Center.
