Sustainability Working Group

President Scott Green has asked this working group to finalize a white paper for the creation of an entity capable of executing on the university’s strategic desire to be known for sustainability. This may include identifying certificates, degrees and courses we offer, the research that we pursue under this umbrella and how the entity will organize and interface with other university stakeholders.  The white paper should answer the question of what separates the University of Idaho from competitors offering similar degrees, certificates and research focus areas. The audit of current offerings would result in recommendations for the early opportunities to market existing degrees and research focused on sustainability, as well as include recommendations for future focus areas in sustainability.

The working group has divided into three focus areas to brainstorm and put together initial plans and ideas around the following:

  1. Academics
  2. Operations
  3. Student Experience

A diverse group of faculty, students, staff and external stakeholders launched the process in November 2021 and expects to begin sharing a first draft of the white paper in the first half of 2022.

External stakeholders were invited for their professional expertise and experience with issues related to sustainability. All faculty, staff and students join the conversation with expertise and/or a passion for sustainability. The perspectives of the members will weigh into and bring together the plan for how we can build upon our current offerings to develop a roadmap devoted to enhancing our expertise related to sustainability.

The working group’s outcome will be the white paper report of ideas and actionable items which together will outline the best path forward to resource and implement a focus on sustainability at the University of Idaho. The draft white paper will be posted on this website landing page when the feedback phase from the U of I community begins.
