Public Student Loan Forgiveness Waiver Ends Monday, Oct. 31
October 13, 2022
Last year, the U.S. Department of Education announced temporary changes to the Public Student Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) and Temporary Expanded PSLF rules for student federal loan borrowers. U of I employees with outstanding educational loan balances can take advantage of this temporary waiver if they’re eligible. This “limited PSLF waiver” opportunity ends Monday, Oct. 31. Borrowers may receive credit for past payments that normally they wouldn't qualify for.
Under the temporary waiver rules, any prior period of repayment will count as a qualifying payment, regardless of loan program, repayment plan, or whether you made the payment in full or on time. But qualifying employment still needs to be validated. The waiver applies to borrowers with Direct Loans, those who have already consolidated into the Direct Loan Program, and those who consolidate into the Direct Loan Program by submitting a consolidation application on or before 11:59 p.m., Eastern time, Monday, Oct. 31.
