November 01, 2023
The Oregon Logging Conference (OLC) Foundation has awarded two UI Forestry students scholarships for the 2023-2024 academic year. The mission of the OLC Foundation is to “provide educational scholarships for study in the field of the forest products industry” by supporting and increasing knowledge, awareness and education for students of all ages and the public about wise use and best management practices associated with the growing, harvesting and manufacturing renewable timber resources.
John Nicholson of Toutle, Washington was awarded $5,000 from the John E. Hadaller Memorial Scholarship Fund and the OLC Foundation. John received an A.S. from Lower Columbia College, and is majoring in Forestry with an emphasis on Forest Operations. He is also working on a minor in Business. This past summer John worked with Merrill & Ring Forest Products of western Washington.
Ryann Harrington was also awarded a scholarship from OLC Foundation totaling $1,000. Ryann came to UI from Quincy, Washington and worked with the Idaho Department of Lands in Orofino on a timber crew. Ryann is majoring in Forestry with an emphasis on General Forestry and a minor in Fire Ecology and Management.
Both John and Ryann are advised by Dr. Randy Brooks in the Department of Forest, Rangeland and Fire Sciences. “I had the opportunity to attend the Oregon Logging Conference with Ryann and John this year and hearing this made my day,” says Brooks. “Both are top-notch, hardworking students and very deserving of these scholarships. They embody the OLCF scholarship program’s mission and are outstanding representatives of the UI’s College of Natural Resources Forestry program. John and Ryann are future leaders and decision makers in the field of forestry.”
