International Degree Equivalency Guide
To apply as a graduate student, applicants must possess the equivalent of a U.S. bachelor's degree.
All international graduate school applicants must satisfy the following criteria to be considered for graduate admission to University of Idaho:
- Have earned a bachelor's degree from a college or university accredited by a recognized accrediting body, a ministry of education or an official quality assurance organization. The bachelor's degree should be equivalent to a U.S. bachelor's degree consisting of four years of study (120 semester credit hours or 180 quarter hours).
- An official academic record from all post-secondary education institutions attended is required. This may take some time so start this early in your application process.
Graduate Admissions at University of Idaho uses a variety of sources to determine equivalencies. Note: The list of equivalencies below is not complete. This list represents the most common credentials we receive from each country.
Foreign Credential Evaluation Services
The University of Idaho Graduate Admissions Office provides in-house transcript evaluations for graduate applicants to our institution. The time involved in the evaluation is dependent on many factors and varies from file to file. In rare cases, if institutional accreditation, document authenticity, degree equivalency, and/or other evaluation components cannot be verified, a course-by-course professional credential evaluation from a third-party service will be requested.
Note: U of I recommends, and reserves the right to require, a professional credential evaluation by an outside, independent party.
Reasons for outside review include, but are not limited to, verification of document authenticity, transfer credits, and the wish to expedite the processing of an application file. If asked to provide a credential evaluation during the application process, you will need to order a course-by-course evaluation report. You are responsible for supplying the correct academic records and paying for the evaluation service.

Graduate international application and admission visa policy
- Not all programs are eligible for F-1 or J-1 visa status. Programs offered fully online do not qualify for F-1 student visa status. Students who wish to enroll in classes in J-1 or F-1 status must apply for and be admitted to an in-person campus.
- The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services regulations require that every student verify the availability of funds to pay for educational and living expenses before an I-20 or DS-2019 form to obtain a visa to enter the U.S. can be issued.
- Immigration regulations require that international students holding F-1 or J-1 student visas be certified as full-time students during the academic year. At University of Idaho, a full-time course load for graduate studies is a minimum of 9 credits. F-1 graduate students are required to enroll in nine credit hours and may take up to three credits of online coursework toward this requirement. J-1 visa holders are also required to enroll in nine credit hours but may not count online classes toward this requirement.
