UI Extension, Schitsu'umsh Reservation helps citizens through research-based, locally relevant education and programs. We offer programming in:
- Agriculture
- Natural resources
- 4-H youth programs
UI Extension, Schitsu’umsh Reservation is part of the Federally Recognized Tribes Extension Program (FRTEP). The purpose of FRTEP is to support Extension educators on American reservations and tribal jurisdictions to address the unique needs of American tribal nations. Emphasis is placed on:
- Developing profitable farming and ranching techniques
- Providing 4-H and youth development experiences
- Providing education and outreach on tribally-identified priorities while using a culturally-sensitive approach
- Fostering leadership development and academic success
FRTEP collaborates with many programs on the reservation, including the Coeur d’Alene Tribe’s Education Department, Natural Resources Department, Tribal School, Food Distribution Program, Tribal wellness center youth programs, community organizations, Plummer Public Library, and the Plummer-Worley School District. We also partner with the One Sky One Earth Food Coalition, Success Center afterschool programs, and regional tribal organizations.
Our 4-H programming includes:
- Juntos program: Academic success and coaching for middle and high school students, focusing on literacy, STEM, leadership and mentorship.
- Gardening: Hands-on learning for youth.
- Success Center Afterschool: Programming at Lakeside Elementary supporting literacy, art, healthy living and STEM.
- Know Your Government: Civic engagement and leadership development.
- Idaho State Teen Association Convention: Statewide leadership opportunities.

Agriculture
UI Extension, Schitsu'umsh Reservation supports food sovereignty and traditional food systems through partnerships with the Coeur d’Alene Tribe and community organizations.
Our agriculture programming includes:
- One Sky One Earth Farmers Market: Managed in partnership with the One Sky One Earth Food Coalition, serving over 1,200 community members annually.
- Community gardening: We offer 4-H youth gardening at Lakeside Elementary and manage gardens at the Tribe’s Natural Resources Department.
- Pumpkin planting and harvesting: Youth programming with Coeur d’Alene Tribal School and Lakeside Elementary in partnership with the Tribe’s Food Distribution and 2nd Harvest.
- Traditional food practices: Supporting the preservation and promotion of traditional ecological knowledge.

- Water Potato Awareness Week: Annual October programming celebrating traditional first foods and plant knowledge.
- Salmon release: Spring programming supporting salmon restoration and cultural education.
- Environmental education: Place-based learning connecting youth to local ecosystems and traditional practices.
