Master long-term investments

Why wait until after graduation to start managing investments when you can begin today? As a member of the Davis Investment Group, you’ll gain practical experience managing securities, including stocks and Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs) within CBE’s trading portfolio. The decision-making, presentation and professional skills you develop through this opportunity will have a lasting impact in your career.

Why join the Davis Investment Group?

Set yourself apart in the finance industry with experience managing long-term investments in an active portfolio. Upon graduation, you’ll be ready tout:

  • Conduct market research
  • Track specific market sectors
  • Present investment opportunities to peers
  • Produce professional reports

The Davis Investment Group connects you with finance professionals across the U.S. through virtual visits and field trips. These exclusive Vandal networking opportunities help you build valuable employer connections.

Davis group investment objectives

You’ll manage a portfolio that includes common stocks, mutual funds, ETFs and cash-equivalent securities. Using a moderately conservative approach, you’ll balance risk and return while diversifying across sectors, industries and asset types.

By actively managing investments and applying real-world strategies, you’ll gain relevant experience while you prepare for your future in finance.

Your investment decisions will focus on two key objectives:

  • Growth of capital: Your goal is to grow the portfolio’s value over time, aiming for annual returns that meet or exceed the S&P 500 index.
  • Preservation of capital: You’ll ensure that the portfolio’s growth outpaces inflation, preserving its long-term value.

Investment guidelines

You’ll learn the principles of a prudent investor, making sound decisions within clear guidelines. Your focus will be on investment merits alone, without considering tax implications. Every asset you select must have a clear market value. To manage risk effectively, you’ll build a well-diversified portfolio, ensuring no single sector, industry or security dominates.

History of the Davis Investment Group

The Davis Investment Group was established in 1989 with a $100,000 grant donated by A.D. and J.E. Davis, founders of Winn Dixie grocery chain. This amount was matched by the U of I Consolidated Investment Trust (CIT). The CIT matching funds, along with a reasonable interest on the use of the funds, have since been returned to the U of I CIT. Presently, the fund is worth over $950,000.

Over the years, the Davis Group has contributed more than $330,000 to U of I and College of Business and Economics scholarship funds, supporting students as they gain real-world investment experience during college.

Get involved with the Davis Investment Group

The Davis Group recruits new members every spring semester. Recruitment is open to current students in the College of Business and Economics.
