Learn how to use data to solve complex problems

Data drives decisions across today’s economy, and statisticians play a critical role in turning that data into practical solutions. At University of Idaho, the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in statistics, general option equips you for a field with growing demand and wide-ranging career opportunities.

In this program, you’ll discover fundamental concepts in probability and statistical inference, evaluate statistical models, and build expertise in statistical computing for data analysis and research. You’ll also learn how to design experiments, plan and interpret surveys, and analyze relationships between social, physical and biological variables.

U of I’s bachelor’s degree in statistics may be a great fit if you:

Curriculum and courses

The B.S. in statistics, general option consists of 120 credit hours across general education requirements and foundational mathematics and statistics courses. You’ll learn how to use statistical methods across disciplines and explore different applications of data and quantitative analysis.

The coursework also includes advanced classes in probability, statistical modeling and data analysis, alongside electives that you can select to match your academic and career interests. This prepares you for a wide range of jobs in data-driven fields or graduate study in statistics, data science and related disciplines.

In the statistics, general option program, you’ll:

  • Build a strong foundation in probability theory, mathematical statistics and statistical inference.
  • Study applied topics such as regression modeling, experimental design and survey methods.
  • Develop computational skills using statistical programming tools like Python, R or SAS.
  • Choose upper-division electives that align with interests in data science, statistical learning, modeling or interdisciplinary research.

Idaho LAUNCH

This degree is approved for Idaho LAUNCH, a grant that supports Idaho students pursuing high-demand careers. Students enrolling under the 2026–27 Academic Catalog may be eligible for up to $4,000 per year / $8,000 total in scholarship funding through the Idaho LAUNCH program.
