Master of Natural Resources

If you're passionate about the outdoors, conservation or environmental problem-solving, a career in natural resource management could be your calling. The integrated natural resources option of the Master of Natural Resources (M.N.R.) program is designed to help you tackle complex environmental challenges from all angles — ecological, social, political, and practical.  

In this affordable in-person or online graduate program, you’ll gain a systems-level view of natural resources through courses that blend science with policy, planning, human dimensions and cutting-edge tools and technology. Whether you come from a science, policy or other background, this flexible, course-based degree will give you the skills and credentials to lead in conservation and resource management.

The integrated natural resources Master of Natural Resources online degree program is perfect for mid- to executive-level professionals who want to advance without stepping away from their careers. Join the country’s largest natural resources graduate program from any location.

Highlights of this program include:  

  • Broad integration across ecology and management, tools and technology, and policy, planning, and society courses
  • Choose from over 60 online courses in natural resources to craft your own curriculum  
  • Multiple practicum experiences are built into the program
  • Non-thesis online or in-person program designed for working professionals to study at their own pace
  • Students may complete the degree in as little as two semesters
  • Up to 12 applicable graduate-level credits can be transferred into the program
  • Can be completed entirely online 

Program curriculum includes:

  • Design your own curriculum to match your interests.
  • Choose 2-3 classes in ecology and management, policy planning and society, and tool and technology subject areas.
  • Popular classes include mountain ecology; rangeland management; fire ecology; law, ethics and the environment; air quality, pollution and smoke; principles of sustainability; lidar and optical remote sensing analysis; water quality; conservation genetics; environmental hydrology; and more.
  • Culminate your learning in a comprehensive final portfolio.

Applicants for the M.N.R. in natural resources, integrated natural resources must meet the following degree-specific admission requirements:

  • Education level: Bachelor's
  • GPA: 3.0
  • GRE: No
  • TOEFL/IELTS/Duolingo: 79/6.5/115 (for applicants whose education was completed in countries where English is not an official language)
  • Number of references: Two 
Program availability:  

Concentration: non-thesis

Semester intake: Fall, Summer, and Spring

  • Eligible for Expedited admission for U of I undergraduates
  • Eligible for international admission

Deadlines: Fall/Summer semester – April 1; Spring semester – November 1
