Enhance your ability to work ethically and effectively with Indigenous communities through U of I’s Indigenous research and education graduate certificate. Designed for both Indigenous and non-Indigenous students, this certificate prepares you to engage with Indigenous Knowledge Systems, land education and community-based research methods.
You’ll explore how learning happens in Indigenous contexts, examine Indigenous approaches to STEM and develop skills to navigate institutions in ways that honor Indigenous priorities. By completing this program, you’ll be equipped to foster respectful partnerships with Tribal communities and support nation building through education and research.

Application information
Applicants for the indigenous research and education graduate certificate must meet the following degree-specific admission requirements:
- Education level: Bachelor's
- GPA: 3.0
- GRE: No
- TOEFL/IELTS/Duolingo: 79/6.5/115 (for applicants whose education was completed in countries where English is not an official language)
- Number of references: No references required
- Other requirements: Completion of the CIRE application during the designated application window. During this period, applicants will:
- Complete an application survey.
- Upload a personal statement outlining interest in Indigenous research and education and how the certificate aligns with their academic or professional goals.
- Participate in an interview with program staff.
- Selected applicants will join a cohort of 12 students who they will complete the certificate program with.
Program availability
- Semester intake: Summer, Fall, Spring
- Not eligible for international students who require F-1 or J-1 visa status
- Deadlines: General application deadlines

Tuition and fees
Students pursuing a graduate certificate as a standalone program are not eligible for financial aid. However, students enrolled in a separate U of I graduate degree program may apply their financial aid or graduate funding toward a graduate certificate if they are pursuing both simultaneously.

Hands-on learning
You will participate in experiential land-based learning activities with Indigenous and allied multi-disciplinary researchers and educators. You will also create a self-directed field experience where you’ll explore how concepts of land education are applied in practice through Tribal-led education and natural resources programs, schools or informal community settings.
