Broaden your historical lens

The ability to view and understand the world through a historical lens is a skill valued in many professions.

In this program, you will further develop your historical perspective through the advanced study and research of the human experience over centuries, continents and cultures.

You may focus your graduate studies on the history of modern Europe, modern United States, or North American West (including the Pacific Northwest). Other program strengths include the history of race and ethnicity, Native American cultures, Latin American cultures, labor, gender, religion, politics and international relations.

Students may choose a non-thesis option or a thesis option. A Ph.D. in historical archaeology is also available.

  • Special emphasis on American West/Pacific Northwest; Science/Health/Environment; Gender Studies
  • Specialized attention with low student-faculty ratio with active researchers
  • Unique Ph.D. with emphasis in Historical Archaeology (co-offered with Department of Sociology and Anthropology)

Clubs and involvement opportunities

Hands-on learning

  • Access specialized facilities: Conduct research and gain field experience in the Alfred W. Bowers Laboratory of Anthropology.
  • Learn directly from experts: Collaborate closely with faculty across diverse specialties.
  • Build experience and fund your studies: Compete for teaching assistantships, scholarships and internships.
  • Curate real exhibits: Partner with the McClure Center through the McClure in History Fellowship to develop public history displays.

  • GPA: 3.0 (applicants with a lower GPA may be considered under specific circumstances)
