The Creative writing undergraduate certificate offers focused training in the craft of writing fiction, nonfiction and poetry. Taught by published writers, the program emphasizes creative technique, revision and audience awareness while helping you develop a strong and cohesive writing portfolio.
You’ll have the opportunity to work deeply in one genre while gaining experience across others, exploring techniques such as character development, imagery, structure and voice. Coursework encourages close reading, thoughtful critique and experimentation with form, helping you understand how craft choices shape meaning.
Students may also gain hands-on experience through publishing and editing coursework or internships with literary journals such as Thistle and Fugue. This certificate supports aspiring writers as well as students who want to strengthen communication, creativity and critical thinking skills applicable across many fields.

U of I’s certificate programs are not eligible for financial aid or scholarships on their own. However, students enrolled in a bachelor's or associate degree program may apply their financial aid and scholarships toward a certificate if they are pursuing both simultaneously.
