Last updated: January 1, 2020

PREAMBLE: This section, intended to define non-tenure track appointments with faculty status, was added July 2001. In January 2020, the university’s promotion and tenure policies were comprehensively revised in order to unify all provisions regarding procedure in the Faculty Staff Handbook and to help faculty and reviewers by clarifying the procedure. The following changes were approved: Deletion of FSH 3520, 3560, and 3570; revision of FSH 3530; and addition of new FSH 3500 and 3510.

Further information may be obtained from the Provost's Office (208-885-6448) or the Office of the Faculty Secretary (208-885-6151).

A. CREATION. Non-tenure track positions may be created upon the recommendation and approval of the department or unit head, the dean, and the provost. Non-tenure track appointments are made only on annual contracts.

B. RIGHTS AND PRIVILEGES. Non-tenure track faculty are eligible for emeritus status and have the same rights and responsibilities as other faculty at the university. Non-tenure track faculty may use the grievance processes available to other faculty. If the appointment is full-time, non-tenure track faculty receive the same benefits as other full-time employees including educational privileges; however, non-tenure track faculty are not eligible for sabbatical leaves.

C. CONVERSION TO TENURE-TRACK STATUS. Conversion from non-tenure track appointments to tenure-track appointments requires the approval of the provost, dean, unit administrator, and unit faculty.
