MOSCOW, Idaho — DancersDrummersDreamers (DDD), a 35-year-old music and dance tradition, takes the stage Thursday through Saturday, March 26-28, at the Hartung Theater on University of Idaho’s campus in Moscow.
The concerts begin at 7:30 p.m. each night, with an additional performance at 2 p.m. March 28. DDD is presented by the U of I Dance Program in collaboration with the Lionel Hampton School of Music (LHSOM). It is a family-friendly event, described as eclectic, playful, collaborative, high-energy and imaginative.
DDD was founded in 1991 by Diane Walker, professor emerita of dance, and Dan Bukvich, distinguished professor of music. This unique production pairs student dance choreography performed by Dance Program students with live music composed and performed by LHSOM students. This year, collaborators will also include faculty mentors and student lighting designers from the Department of Theatre Arts.
This year, DDD will be dedicated to the memory of Walker. Melanie Meenan, clinical associate professor and dance program coordinator, worked under Walker’s artistic direction of DDD for nearly 10 years.
“It is an incredible honor to continue to support Diane’s legacy,” Meenan said. “As a co-director of DDD, much of my overall focus has been to support Diane’s vision of blending music and dance into a seamless theatrical and entertaining show. In this 35th season, my hope is people can appreciate the creativity and collaborative vision that Diane and Dan have created through this tradition.”
Grace Tish, a senior dance and music student, has participated in DDD for four consecutive years as a dancer and twice as a choreographer.
“We come together as dance and music students to create the show,” Tish said. “It is hard work and we must learn to overcome challenges quickly and efficiently. I have found an incredible feeling of accomplishment and have realized how rewarding hard work can be through DDD. This is a mindset that I have been able to apply to my other areas of study.”
Tickets range from $10 to $18 and can be purchased at uitickets.com. The event will also be available to stream virtually Monday, March 30, through Sunday, April 5. Tickets for the virtual event start at $10 at uitickets.com.
