BY Noelle M. Hart, Patricia A. Townsend

January 28, 2021

With world demand for green energy sources growing exponentially, alternative fuel is definitely a market worth knowing more about. Biodiesel, an alternative fuel produced from fats like vegetable oil or used cooking oil, is one that shows great potential in the Pacific Northwest (PNW). Given the area's grain production output, some forecasters envision the region as a notable biodiesel hub. Learn more about this emergent fuel market, particularly in Washington and Oregon, in this 16-page booklet. Along with discussing basic background info about biodiesel, the authors describe its role in the PNW; its impacts (environmental and economic); federal, state and local policies; demand/consumption data; the various feedstocks that support it (including oilseed, canola and camelina); and relevant production issues.
