Purple loosestrife is a perennial wetland weed native to Europe, Asia, and northern Africa that was introduced to North America in the 1800s. It spreads largely by seed and can outcompete and displace native plants, including cattails, wild rice, and several other herbaceous plants that are important for waterfowl habitats. It can also reduce water flow and quality. Part of an integrated pest management (IPM) series, this colorfully illustrated bulletin helps homeowners and producers to identify the plant and to learn the IPM options available for its control. Ecological information and treatment recommendations further supplement the basic information shared about the pest’s description, biology (life cycle), and management strategies.
