Integrated Pest Management of Houndstongue

BUL-1126

A publication coverPublication links

BY Justin Hatch

January 2, 2026

Houndstongue is a major noxious weed in Idaho that invades rangelands, pastures, roadsides, forest clearings, campgrounds, and other disturbed sites. Its ingestion by livestock, especially horses and cattle, can cause irreversible, often fatal liver damage. Part of an integrated pest management (IPM) series, this colorfully illustrated bulletin helps homeowners and growers alike to identify the toxic plant and to learn the IPM options available for its control. Ecological information and treatment recommendations further supplement the basic information shared about the pest’s description, biology (life cycle), and management strategies.
