How to Handle Tarantulas in a Classroom Setting

BUL-1120

A publication cover

BY Jason Thomas, Paula Cushing, Lauren Kerzicnik

January 2, 2026

Handling tarantulas may seem scary or even foolhardy, but informed exposure might just help to transform a person’s fears about spiders into curiosity or respect. Indeed, for the best outcome, you need to know the proper technique. In this five-page bulletin, learn the most effective methods, including choosing the safest species to handle; applying a well-illustrated, step-by-step strategy; preventive techniques to improve a species’ docility; and troubleshooting in the rare event of a bite. Following these procedures will make your handling experience successful and allow you to teach it to others (including children).
