The Friendship Family Program connects international students and scholars at University of Idaho with local families in the Moscow community. This program offers a welcoming, informal way for students to experience American culture, share their own traditions and build lasting friendships. Participants are encouraged to meet at least once per semester — or more often when possible — for conversation, meals, outings and cultural exchange. Apply to join the Friendship Family program or contact  ipo-events@uidaho.edu with any questions.

    Frequently asked questions

Why should I apply to be a part of the Friendship Family Program?

Whether you are a local family or an international student seeking to be paired with a family, this program helps build a bridge to mutual understanding by providing enriching cross-cultural engagement.

As international students, this is a fabulous way to better understand and adjust to life in the United States and get more involved with the local Moscow community.

As local Friendship Families, this is a fantastic way to better understand our world and offer hospitality to those who are far away from their home countries.

What are the requirements to apply for this program?

Friendship Families must meet with their matched student or scholar for at least two hours once a semester throughout their commitment to the program for a full year.

It is recommended to meet at least once a month during their first semester at University of Idaho to assist with any needs they may have.

All participants must also attend the Welcome Back Picnic hosted by the International Programs Office at the beginning of the fall semester.

As a Friendship Family, how many students or scholars should I expect to be assigned?

Each Friendship Family gets to decide how many students or scholars they would like to be assigned.

As a Friendship Family, what do I do if the student or scholar I am paired with is unresponsive or decides to no longer participate in the program?

We understand that there are often unforeseen circumstances that may cause participants to withdraw from the program. If this happens, please email ipo-events@uidaho.edu.
