    4. English Conversation Partner

The English Conversation Partners Program at University of Idaho is a meaningful way for both international and English-speaking students to build language skills and cross-cultural understanding. As a participant in the program, you'll be paired with another student for regular conversations that promote connection, confidence and mutual learning. International students gain valuable practice speaking English and adjusting to life in the U.S., while English-speaking participants enhance their communication skills, expand their global perspective and build lasting international friendships.

Sign up to become a conversation partner or contact ipo-events@uidaho.edu if you have any questions.

    Frequently asked questions

Why should I apply to the English Conversation Partners Program?

Whether you are a native English speaker or want to practice conversational English, this program creates an opportunity to build conversational skills and provides enriching cross-cultural engagement.

What are the requirements to apply for this program?

The only requirement for this program is time. Conversation Partners are required to meet for at least one hour each month throughout the semester.

All participants are also advised to attend the Welcome Back Picnic hosted by the International Programs Office at the beginning of the fall semester.

As an English Conversation Partner, how many students/scholars should I expect to be assigned?

Each English Conversation Partner gets to decide how many students/scholars they would like to be assigned.

As a Conversation Partner, what do I do if the student/scholar I am paired with is unresponsive or decides to no longer participate in the program?

We understand that there are often unforeseen circumstances that may cause participants to withdraw from the program. If this happens, please email ipo-events@uidaho.edu.

Will there be an option to be paired with someone who can help me practice another language?

Right now, there isn’t a specific Language Exchange Program, but if you are interested in a language exchange, contact the IPO Program Coordinator at ipo-events@uidaho.edu.
