Create immersive experiences: Major in virtual tech and design

Virtual technology is transforming the way we live, work and learn. University of Idaho’s Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in virtual technology and design (VTD) program is unique in the Pacific Northwest. Learning artistic, creative and technical skills, you will combine those skills and gain an in-depth knowledge of digital technology through hands-on production, collaboration and presentation. Design problem-solving and solutions result in the creation of digital applications and art that answer important questions and spearhead innovations for agriculture, fighting wildfires, water management and rural communities. Alongside faculty, you’ll research and develop projects including energy distribution, training the workforce for high tech industries using Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) and utilizing digital twin technology.

Your virtual design career starts here

Our virtual technology and design bachelor’s degree program offers unique opportunities that prepare you for a career as an emerging designer, builder, storyteller or researcher, while connecting with notable faculty, peers and industry leaders.

  • Hands-on projects: Immersive worlds for education, develop virtual training tools for first responders, design animated films showcased at university festivals and even more.
  • Prepare for a games industry career: This degree is designed for students who aim to build careers in the professional games industry or related fields such as simulation, edutainment and visualization. The program prepares graduates to compete in an increasingly complex and evolving industry.
  • Interdisciplinary projects: Interdisciplinary is a defining feature of the program. As the digital entertainment industry continues to expand, employers seek graduates who understand multiple facets of the field. You will graduate as a game artist and producer with diverse technical and creative backgrounds.

Curriculum and courses

The bachelor’s in virtual technology and design is a four-year, interdisciplinary degree program that prepares you to design innovative digital experiences. Classes cover virtual and spatial design, computer science, engineering and the humanities, ensuring you have a well-rounded view of the field. You’ll develop versatile skills in creativity, technical problem-solving and storytelling through collaborative design studios, a seminar and a culminating capstone project.

Scholarships

Unlock scholarship opportunities at University of Idaho! When you apply to U of I, you're automatically considered for scholarships. We also offer a variety of scholarships based on experience, background and academic programs that you can apply for to help pay for college.

Professional fees

CAA’s Professional Fee directly supports essential resources such as design studios, specialized equipment, student groups and more. Fee costs are:

  • All full-time students (10-20 credits) — $716.00 per semester
  • Part-time undergraduate students (1-9 credits) — $72.00 per credit
  • Part-time graduate students — $80.00 per credit (does not exceed $716)
Clubs and involvement opportunities

In the virtual technology and design program, you can get involved by joining the Virtual Design Society (VDS) with tutorials, guest speakers and other student activities.

Beyond clubs, the VTD degree program emphasizes hands-on learning through research. Work with faculty and peers on projects, including those funded by national grants, to expand your skills, find your passion and contribute to advancements in virtual design.

Application information

Undergraduate applications open each September and admissions are processed on a rolling basis. Qualified students are admitted and considered for scholarships and financial aid as applications are received.

Second-, third- and fourth-year admission

To continue into the second, third and fourth years of the VTD program, you must submit a portfolio highlighting your design work at the end of each year. This showcases that you are progressing in your skills and are ready for advanced coursework.
