Train to teach, teach to inspire
With a Master of Arts in teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL), you’ll gain the theory, skills and hands-on experience you need to teach English as a second or foreign language. In this program, you’ll explore the latest research in linguistics, language acquisition and teaching methodologies, while applying those insights directly to classroom practice.
You’ll learn how to design effective lessons and materials, create assessments and deliver instruction to culturally and linguistically diverse learners from kindergarten through adult education. Through coursework and practicum experiences, you’ll build confidence to lead classrooms and support students in a variety of English language learning environments.

Application information
All applicants must meet the following degree-specific admission requirements:
- Education level: Bachelor's
- GPA: 3.0
- GRE: No
- TOEFL/IELTS/Duolingo: 79/6.5/115 (for applicants whose education was completed in countries where English is not an official language)
- U of I’s American Language and Culture Program (ALCP) with score of a Level 6/Advanced Pass
- Letters of recommendation: Three
- Other requirements:
- Provide one sample of your writing that best demonstrates your compositional skills and academic abilities.
- Primary speakers of English in the TESOL program must have studied a world language for at least one semester (or equivalent) within the preceding five years. Multilingual speakers of English are excused from this requirement.
