Applicants for the Geographic information systems graduate certificate must meet the following degrees-specific admission requirements:

• Education level: Bachelor's
• GPA: 3.0
• GRE: No
• TOEFL/IELTS/Duolingo: 79/6.5/115 (for applicants whose education was completed in countries where English is not an official language)
• Number of references: no references required
• Other requirements: No

Program availability

• Semester intake: Summer, Fall, Spring
• Not eligible for international students who require F-1 or J-1 visa status
• Deadlines: general application deadlines

Students pursuing a graduate certificate as a standalone program are not eligible for financial aid. However, students enrolled in a separate U of I graduate degree program may apply their financial aid or graduate funding toward a graduate certificate if they are pursuing both simultaneously.

• Want to apply GIS to land use, water resources and fire management
• Seek technical GIS and remote sensing skills for research or careers
• Use spatial analysis for infrastructure, zoning and socioeconomic studies
• Work with spatial data and hydrologic modeling
• Wanting to add geospatial programming and visualization to your skillset
• Work in government, NGOs or private sectors needing geospatial tools for decision-making

Real-world experience

Many of your courses will include a lab, and you’ll also have opportunities to contribute to faculty research projects, including:

• Polar meteorology and remote sensing in arctic environments
• Regional climate change in the Western United States
• Forest disturbances and environmental change
• Human adaptation to climate change in high latitudes
• Natural resource applications of GIS in quantifying carbon fluxes
