Environmental science

Master of Science

Environmental science majors doing field work.

We have one Earth. Help us make the most of it.

University of Idaho’s Master of Science in environmental science is designed for professionals committed to protecting and conserving the world for future generations. Recognizing that every industry must prioritize ecosystem preservation and sustainability, this program takes an interdisciplinary approach, covering key areas such as waste management, environmental pollution, policy and law, water science, land use and energy systems.

The Master of Science in environmental science thesis option is a campus-based program. You will conduct research on the effects of both natural and human-made processes, exploring their impact on the physical components of the planet. You’ll work to identify solutions to pressing environmental issues, aiming to maintain the delicate balance of ecosystems' biocomplexity.

The campus-based curriculum focuses on how nature and society interact, particularly in areas like resource conservation, sustainable development and managing man-made contaminants in water supplies. You will analyze current environmental systems to predict future ecological changes and develop science-driven solutions to protect ecosystems and natural resources.

If you choose the non-thesis option, you can complete the program on campus or fully online. In the non-thesis program of study, you can explore how natural and human-made processes shape the planet’s physical systems. You will analyze environmental challenges and develop approaches that support resilient ecosystems.
