Discipline. Creativity. Confidence. Leadership. As a student of dance, you will learn what it takes to achieve your dreams both on and off the dance floor.
In this program, you will develop your technique and talent with professional training in the performance, choreography and instruction of dance. Through concerts, studio practice, and classroom study you will explore and gain experience in many forms of the art, including ballet, jazz, modern dance, hip hop, tap and world dance.
Dance majors are required to audition for admittance into the program.

Clubs and involvement opportunities
Performance opportunities
Dance students have numerous opportunities to perform throughout their college studies.
- Dancers audition for the pre-professional fall company working closely with faculty and guest artists in choreography projects.
- DancersDrummersDreamers is a collaboration with the Lionel Hampton School of Music performed to original, live music. It has toured with selected dancers throughout the Northwest.
- Choreo-Lab and Dance Research Showcase feature advanced student choreography.
- Dance Off Hand is a bi-annual informal concert series.
Professional development
Opportunities to enrich student learning through guest master classes are provided by the dance program. Recent artists and companies include Paul Taylor II Company, Repertory Dance Theatre (Salt Lake City), Michael Schumacher (Amsterdam), Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Ensemble (Denver), Lulu Washington Dance Theatre (Los Angeles), Trey McIntyre Project (Boise) and BodyVox Dance (Portland), Eugene Ballet, Ache Basil (Canada), Soul Street (New York City) and Max Pham Nguyen (Los Angeles).
Annual conferences attended by dance students include the American College Dance Association Conference and Idaho Dance Education Organization.
With mentorship, students also attend and regularly apply to summer intensives and dance internships including American Dance Festival, Repertory Dance Theatre Workshop, Ririe Woodbury, Summer Intensive, Northwest Dance Project, Christopher Morgan Summer Intensive, Dance Place, Strictly Seattle and Jacob’s Pillow.
Student involvement
Students also can become involved in university student organizations including the National Society for Dance Arts. Students teach in public schools through our Teaching Creative Dance for Children course and take advantage of dance pedagogy practicum hours through local studios. Qualified candidates are hired as dance instructors through in-residence academy, Festival Dance and teach myriad studio courses. Students are able to earn real world experience to enhance their résumés.
Application information
Undergraduate applications open each September and admissions are processed on a rolling basis. Qualified students are admitted and considered for scholarships and financial aid as applications are received.
