Curriculum and instruction | Teacher certification emphasis

Master of Education

Dara McCarthy, a University of Idaho Boise doctoral student in the College of Education, Health and Human Sciences, has been a school counselor at Pathways Middle School, in Meridian, ID, for over 10 years. Through her doctoral research, she is combining her counseling background and her current field of study, educational leadership, to advance alternative education in Idaho and beyond.

Lead learning

Rooted in teacher education, this curriculum blends cutting-edge instructional strategies, educational research and hands-on learning to prepare you for roles in both K–12 and higher-education settings. You’ll explore student learning theories, modern teaching technologies and best practices in curriculum design — all grounded in a strong understanding of the social, cultural, historical and political forces that shape education. The Teacher Certification emphasis area builds off your mastery of a secondary school content area, helping you work toward receiving secondary teacher certification in the state of Idaho. Expanding on the core courses, you’ll learn strategies for addressing individual differences in the classroom, planning and administering district-wide curriculum, utilizing various teaching models, reinforcing subject matters through reading and writing, and testing and evaluation in schools.

Graduates emerge with a well-rounded skill set — they design engaging, standards-based curriculum, apply diverse teaching methods, integrate technology meaningfully and assess learning with precision using a variety of tools. They also learn to conduct and evaluate educational research to enhance their practice while gaining the tools to create inclusive, culturally responsive learning environments. Whether you're looking to deepen your expertise or take on a leadership role, this program offers you a transformative path forward.
