Chemistry | Professional option
Bachelor of Science
Mixing molecules and making careers
Everything you see, touch or smell involves chemistry — whether natural or man-made. Chemists study the structure and behavior of substances and create entirely new ones to advance medicine, develop sustainable energy, improve materials and tackle global challenges.
In this program, you’ll explore the core principles of chemistry: how substances interact, transform and follow the laws of nature. You’ll gain hands-on experience in research and build advanced analytical skills, preparing you to apply your knowledge in areas such as health care, environmental protection, national security, food safety, manufacturing and more.
The professional option is accredited by the American Chemical Society (ACS) and offers a rigorous curriculum designed for students planning to enter the chemistry workforce or pursue graduate studies (M.S. or Ph.D.). This path follows a carefully structured course sequence with a strong emphasis on chemistry, math and the physical sciences, ensuring you meet national professional standards.
Graduates are well-prepared for careers in research, industry, education, forensic science, medicine and beyond — anywhere chemistry plays a role in creating meaningful solutions.

Clubs and involvement opportunities
Hands-on learning
Chemistry emphasizes participation of undergraduates in research. This is usually done for credit, via CHEM 2990 or CHEM 4910.
As a chemistry student, you’ll also have the opportunity to:
- Train on state-of-the-art instrumentation such as: X-ray diffractometers, advanced NMR spectrometers, mass spectrometer, electron microscope with Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS).
- Participate in an internship to gain early career connections for skill-based employment with leading industries.
- Participate in an Education Abroad semester or year to gain invaluable exposure to other cultures and world views.
Clubs
- Chemistry Club (student affiliate of the American Chemical Society)
- College of Science Ambassadors
