If you're planning a future as a doctor, dentist, physical therapist or other health care professional, the pre-medical option within the chemistry major is designed to set you up for success. This flexible pathway allows you to tailor your coursework to meet the prerequisites for medical, dental and other professional school entrance exams, while building a strong foundation in chemical principles.
You’ll receive rigorous training in chemistry, develop analytical and research skills, and learn how to apply scientific knowledge to real-world challenges in health care and beyond. This program also offers the adaptability to explore other career options in chemistry should your goals evolve.
Whether you're focused on medical school or still exploring your path, this option ensures you graduate with the knowledge and skills to succeed.
The Forensics option is intended as preparation for students who wish to enter the field of Forensic science. It is not a Forensics degree as such, but a full-fledged Chemistry degree that encompasses course work that benefits those who plan to seek employment at a crime lab and finalize their forensic training there. The Forensics option places emphasis on analytical chemistry and includes courses in Biology and Statistics.

Program specific scholarships
- The Department of Chemistry offers nearly $200,000 in undergraduate scholarships each year.
- All admitted and continuing chemistry majors are considered for scholarships by the Chemistry Scholarship Committee. For any special needs, please contact the Department.
- The college and department offer stipends and undergraduate research support for eligible students.
Clubs and involvement opportunities
Hands-on learning
Chemistry emphasizes participation of undergraduates in research. This is usually done for credit, via CHEM 2990 or CHEM 4910.
As a chemistry student, you’ll also have the opportunity to:
- Train on state-of-the-art instrumentation such as: X-ray diffractometer, advanced NMR spectrometers, mass spectrometer, electron microscope with Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS).
- Participate in an internship to gain early career connections for skill-based employment with leading industries.
- Participate in an Education Abroad semester or year to gain invaluable exposure to other cultures and world views.

Application information
Undergraduate applications open each September and admissions are processed on a rolling basis. Qualified students are admitted and considered for scholarships and financial aid as applications are received.
