Short Bios

President Chuck Staben

Chuck Staben is the 18th president of the University of Idaho, the state’s major research, land-grant university. Since coming to UI, Staben has emphasized the importance of serving Idaho by increasing post-secondary enrollment and student success. He is also focused on promoting innovation within UI’s research endeavors and enhancing the institution’s economic development impact for the state and nation. Before joining UI, Staben served the University of South Dakota as provost, and the University of Kentucky as a faculty member and research leader. He earned his doctoral degree in biochemistry at the University of California, Berkeley, and was a postdoctoral fellow at Chiron Research Laboratories and Stanford University. He and his wife, Mary Beth, have three children. Staben enjoys the outdoors, especially bicycling, and has a standing racquetball challenge to any student.

Dr. Mary Beth Staben

Mary Beth Staben received her bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Smith College in 1978. She and President Chuck Staben met while she was doing graduate work in chemistry at the University of California, Berkeley. Mary Beth worked for IBM from 1980 until 1991 as a manufacturing engineer, engineering manager, marketing representative and product developer. In 1994, she began a new chapter of her life by entering the University of Kentucky Medical School. She completed her medical degree and residency in internal medicine in 2000. Mary Beth practiced as a hospitalist in Lexington, Kentucky, until moving to Idaho in March 2014. She currently practices as a hospitalist at St. Luke’s Hospital in Boise. Mary Beth and Chuck have three children. She enjoys volunteering with the Moscow and Boise community as an ambassador of the University of Idaho.
