All active and retired faculty members are encouraged--urged--to participate in the annual commencement ceremonies; full professors whose primary duties are in teaching or research are expected to do so. This is an important event in the life of the university and a unique opportunity for the faculty and students to participate together, thus heightening the sense of community among them. The chair of the Faculty Senate is responsible for marshaling the faculty procession. (Section 4990 contains information on the origin and significance of academic dress and symbols, with special reference to UI customs and usage.)
