SS 2.1: Expanding access to education in the American West

Learn how the Morrill Act and the land-grant mission helped create University of Idaho and expand educational opportunities

Moscow Middle School students record an America 250 podcast with University of Idaho leadership on Friday, January 30, 2026. The students' questions were inspired by this year’s Common Read – Sharon McMahon’s “The Small and the Mighty" – and their work with UI students from the EDCI 2010 course (Ed-Curriculum and Instruction: Contexts of Education).Mario Pile records a podcast with Moscow Middle School students as part of U of I’s America250 outreach.

As the United States marks its 250th anniversary through the America250 commemoration, University of Idaho is exploring its own place in the American story. In this episode, Mario Pile, student ombuds, retention specialist in the College of Letters, Arts and Social Sciences and a member of U of I’s America250 committee, discusses the Morrill Act, the land-grant mission and the founding of University of Idaho. The conversation explores how higher education expanded beyond the nation’s elite, the university’s earliest years and the enduring value of educational opportunity.

How did the land-grant mission shape University of Idaho?

University of Idaho was founded as Idaho's land-grant university, part of a national effort to expand access to higher education through the Morrill Act of 1862. The legislation provided federal land to states to establish public institutions focused on agriculture, engineering, military science and practical education, creating opportunities for students who previously may not have had access to college.

In this episode, Pile explores how the land-grant mission helped shape the university’s early years and long-term impact. He discusses the university's first students, the role of higher education in a growing state and how subsequent legislation expanded educational opportunities to a broader range of Americans.

As the nation commemorates its 250th anniversary through America250, Pile also reflects on how University of Idaho fits into the larger American story. The conversation explores how the land-grant mission continues to shape the university's commitment to education, opportunity and public service.
