Meet Mike Maughan, an associate professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at University of Idaho. His research focuses on materials development, advanced manufacturing, design and the intersection among them. He discusses a project called PrinTimber, which he hopes will change the future of construction.

What is the construction industry doing, or what might it do in the future, to make buildings more climate friendly?

What if you could 3D print a house made from waste materials and help solve housing and environmental crises at the same time? Maughan is turning that idea into reality with his team’s research on sustainable 3D printing for homes. With a $4 million National Science Foundation grant, Maughan and his team are developing a machine to print structural walls from wood composites made from sawdust, branches and other leftover materials. This innovative method not only cuts down on labor costs and safety risks but also tackles climate issues by utilizing waste instead of chopping down new trees. Maughan explains that the 3D-printed houses are made from fire-resistant thermoset wood composites, which are a more eco-friendly option compared to concrete. The project also includes developing recyclable materials, ensuring the process is cradle-to-cradle — where old homes can be turned into new ones. The effort involves a diverse team from University of Idaho and beyond, blending engineering, natural resources and architecture expertise. Looking ahead, Maughan envisions a future where you can rent a 3D printer to build your own home, making housing more accessible and affordable for everyone.
