Anime and manga highlighted at 2023 AsiaPOP! symposium

Event features many activities over the course of the month

MOSCOW, Idaho — The community is invited to a multi-day event promoting both the appreciation and study of anime and manga and their influence on East Asia and the world. Events run now through Friday, Sept. 15. The activities include speakers from the industry and the academy, as well as free manga exhibits and anime screenings.

Thursday, Aug. 17 – Friday, Sept. 15

  • “Manga and War” exhibit, in cooperation with Kyoto International Manga Museum, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays, ISUB Reflections Gallery.
  • “Idaho Student Manga Competition Exhibit,” 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday, or by appointment, Ridenbaugh Gallery.

Thursday, Aug. 24

  • Manga Exhibits Opening Reception, 4-6 p.m., Reflections and Ridenbaugh galleries, refreshments served at Reflections.

Monday, Sept. 11

  • Manga Drawing Workshop for Idaho high school students with Dennis Lo, manga artist, 3:30 p.m., online. Space is limited.

Tuesday, Sept. 12

  • Heekyoung Cho, professor of Korean literature at University of Washington, “The Webtoon and Its Affordances.” Moderator Robin Johnson, U of I School of Journalism and Mass Media, 2 p.m., ISUB Clearwater-Whitewater room.
  • Ben Applegate, director of publishing services at Penguin Random House, “An Overview of Manga Publishing and Localization.” Moderator Sarah Nelson, U of I School of Global Studies, 4 p.m., ISUB Clearwater-Whitewater room.
  • Sailor Moon R: The Movie, 7 p.m., Kenworthy Performing Arts Centre.

Wednesday, Sept. 13

  • Lynn Shiori Miyauchi, senior specialist for cultural affairs, Consulate-General of Japan in Seattle, “Japan Exchange and Teaching Program: Information Session,” 10:30 a.m., Administration Building Room 317.
  • Akiko Sugawa-Shimada, professor of urban innovation at Yokohama National University, “Magical Girl Anime in Japan: Empowerment or Problems?” Moderator: Yuta Kaminishi, Habib Institute and School of Journalism and Mass Media, 1:30 p.m., ISUB Clearwater-Whitewater Room.
  • Mari Morimoto, manga translator, “Mari & Manga's Most Interesting Adventure." Moderator: Azusa Tojo, U of I School of Global Studies, 4 p.m., ISUB Clearwater-Whitewater room.
  • The First Slam Dunk, 7 p.m., Kenworthy Performing Arts Centre.

Thursday, Sept. 14

  • Yukari Fujimoto, professor of global Japanese studies at Meiji University, “Women Loving: The History of 'Yuri' (Girls’ Love) Manga.” Moderator: Rebecca Scofield, U of I Department of History, 2 p.m., ISUB Clearwater-Whitewater room.
  • Anne Yatco, voice actor, “Engineering a Career in Anime and Video Games (Or, how to simultaneously disappoint and impress your Asian parents)” — a meet-and-greet/autograph session (2D images only) will follow the talk and Q&A. Moderator: Robert Caisley, U of I Department of Theatre Arts, 4 p.m., ISUB Crest-Horizon-Aurora room.
