Study the systems that sustain life — and learn to protect them
Build the scientific foundation your ecology career demands. Get rigorous, hands-on training in biology, ecological systems and conservation with the ecosystem ecology option or explore the terrestrial ecology emphasis or aquatic ecology emphasis. Each of the three emphasis areas are fully aligned with the Ecological Society of America's (ESA) coursework requirements for professional certification. You will graduate equipped to pursue ESA's Ecologist in Training designation from day one, giving you a credential edge in a competitive job market.
The ecosystem ecology option prepares you to begin a career as an ecosystem ecologist to help us understand and protect the natural systems that sustain life on Earth. Whether it’s understanding carbon cycling in forests, nutrient flows in rivers or how wildfires impact human health, our ecosystem ecology program gives you the scientific training, hands-on field experience and professional credentials to become the scientist who solves real environmental problems.
