Conservation biology

Bachelor of Science

Fisheries student Jack Stafford earned a scholarship to study insects in streams. He is pictured collecting aquatic insects in a stream near Potlatch, Idaho.

Understanding and conserving biodiversity

Professionals in conservation biology help promote a sustainable future for our planet – and for those who live on it – by working to research, conserve and restore the Earth’s biodiversity.

In this program, you will build a strong foundation in traditional sciences like biology and ecology. You will also explore social sciences and form a deep multidisciplinary understanding of the environmental, social and political challenges that threaten plants, animals and ecosystems. Conservation biology students complete a three-semester thesis — a great pathway to start your professional network, build your capacity and develop elite research skills.

Professionals in this field conduct cutting edge research on the Earth’s biotic systems (and the threats to those systems), work with policy makers to protect endangered species and lead interdisciplinary conservation programs. Whether you want to be a researcher, work for a government agency, a private conservation organization, an eco-tourism group or for businesses in sustainable development, this program can help you get there.
