Water Safety Instructor Classes
Blended-Learning Water Safety Instructor Course
The purpose of the American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Course is to provide instructor candidates with the skills needed to teach courses and make presentations to swimmers of every age and ability. Blended learning combines online learning with on-site skills sessions. Students are required to complete the online lessons prior to the corresponding skills sessions.

- On-Site In-Water Skills Sessions: (6 p.m. - 10 p.m.)

Fee: $200.00 course fee plus required Water Safety Instructor Manual & Swimming and Water Safety Manual (available for purchase on the American Red Cross store website).

Course Prerequisites: Minimum age of 16 by the first day of the class. Fundamentals of Instructor Training Course (FIT) will be provided with the course.
Demonstrate swimming skills by swimming the following strokes:
- Back Crawl - 25 yards
- Breaststroke - 25 yards
- Butterfly - 15 yards
- Elementary backstroke - 25 yards
- Front Crawl - 25 yards
- Maintain position on back for 1 minute in deep water (floating or sculling)
- Sidestroke - 25 yards
- Tread water for 1 minute
Candidates must attend all sessions to pass this course
Class Refund and Cancellation Policy
Private Lessons must be canceled with 24 hours notice. Private lesson cancellations will not qualify for a refund or reschedule date when canceled with less than 24 hours notice. Refunds are subject to a $5 administration charge for all refunded private lessons.
Group lessons and Lifeguard Re-certification classes are subject to a $25 refund administration charge if patron cancels or chooses not to participate within 48 hours of the start of the first day of lessons.
Lifeguard and Water Safety Instructor classes are subject to a $50 refund administration charge if patron cancels or chooses not to participate within 48 hours of the start of the first day of class.
The University of Idaho Swim Center also reserves the right to cancel a class due to low enrollment or lack of instructor. Participants of the Swim Center canceled classes will be refunded the full amount of their payment.
