Distance Advising

For Students:

  • During periods of recommended social distancing, advising will continue via phone, Zoom, or over email.
  • To schedule an appointment with your advisor, click My Success Network in VandalStar. If your advisor does not have online scheduling set up, you will still see their contact information and may use it to schedule an appointment.
  • Continue to prepare for your advising appointments by:
    • Reviewing Degree Audit
    • Preparing a list of possible courses
    • Listing any questions to discuss

For Advisors:

  • University Advising Services advisors will be practicing social distancing by meeting with students via Zoom, phone, or email.
  • Distance advising appointments should be comparable to in-person appointments and can be improved by effective use of technology. As you and your students may be learning new technology, plan for meetings to last 30-60 minutes. Here are some helpful technology tips and tricks:
    • Update your VandalStar profile so students know the best way to contact you.
    • Use VandalStar to schedule appointments. Set your available time slots so students may sign-up using a convenient and secure scheduling system. This saves time for students and advisors by avoiding lengthy email exchanges and allows students to schedule proactively.
    • Schedule Zoom meetings to allow for an experience that feels comparable to a traditional in-person appointment. Both parties can share their computer screen which makes it easy to discuss Degree Audit and/or Schedule Planner options.
    • Connect students with university services that offer distance support by searching for the service name or “online,” “phone” or “distance” in the search bar in the Services tab in VandalStar. Refer to the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) webpage for additional information.
  • If you are not advising from your usual location, take additional caution to protect student information from being viewed by others around you.
