James C. Gaither Junior Fellows Program

Each year, through the James C. Gaither Junior Fellows program, the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace offers approximately 12-14 one-year fellowships to uniquely qualified graduating seniors and individuals who have graduated during the past academic year. James C. Gaither Junior Fellows work as research assistants to the Endowment's senior associates, receiving hands-on exposure to international policy-making. Junior Fellows have the opportunity to conduct research for books, co-author journal articles and policy papers, participate in meetings with high-level officials, contribute to congressional testimony, and organize briefings attended by scholars, journalists and government officials. These are paid, full-time positions for one year.

  • Nominees must be graduating seniors or students who have graduated during the last academic year.
  • Nominees must be eligible to work in the United States for a full 12 months from August 1 through July 31 following graduation.

The application includes:

  • Application form
  • Essay on why the student would like to become a junior fellow
  • Resume
  • Two references
  • College transcript(s)
  • An essay on a topic determined by the Carnegie Endowment

Applications are judged on the quality of the written essay, related academic study and/or work experience, grades, recommendations, and personal interviews. Nominees will be competitive if they can demonstrate certain skills, such as proficiency in Arabic or math skills, which match the needs of particular projects and initiatives at the Carnegie Endowment.

The application is typically available the first week of October. Applications should be submitted to the Distinguished Scholarships Coordinator by the U of I internal deadline. Applications are due to the Carnegie Endowment by the foundation deadline. U of I may nominate up to two candidates for consideration by the Carnegie Endowment.

The Carnegie Selection Committee chooses approximately 25 applicants for interviews. These finalists are interviewed in February and early March. Finalists will be notified of their selection by March 31. All fellowship positions begin on Aug. 1.
