Biology Senior Instructor Awarded Potlatch #1 Federal Credit Union Faculty-Staff Award
Candi Heimgartner received the Potlatch #1 Federal Credit Union Faculty-Staff Award at the February 17 basketball game. This award is presented to a faculty-staff member who has contributed to the overall academic progress of U of I student-athletes.
After accepting this award, she stated, "I have been teaching human anatomy and physiology at U of I for the past 15 years in the department of biological sciences and I consider myself a “true” Vandal as I have earned two degrees from U of I and never left. I am honored to teach for my alma mater for so many years.
In addition to my introductory anatomy and physiology courses, several student athletes often find a love for the material and continue on with me as teaching assistants. In these upper division courses, they gain an in-depth perspective of teaching in these sciences and many go on to succeed in graduate schools and successful careers. I am always excited to hear from former students about their successful futures.
Many student athletes take my courses each year and I am proud to work with students that can successfully manage a tough course load, intensive practice schedule, and represent U of I on the road and at home.
"I strive each and every lecture and lab to make a connection with my students and I am proud to watch them perform both academically and on the field and court. I want to thank these athletes for this nomination and award and for making me very proud to be a Vandal."
