The creation of the James A. and Louise McClure Center for Public Policy Research at the University of Idaho is a cornerstone project in our institution’s willingness to embrace its 125-year legacy of leadership and set new standards of excellence and impact on behalf of those we will serve in the future.

We live in a world where issues are complex and proposed solutions are charged with emotion. Yet with consequences so critical, it is more important than ever that we reach decisions and formulate public policies based on fact and thoughtful analysis.

It is the need for facts, critical analysis and public debate that makes this the time for the University of Idaho to enhance its role in public policy, which originated in 1959 with the creation of the Bureau of Public Affairs Research. In 2007, the Idaho State Board of Education approved the renaming of this Bureau to the James A. and Louise McClure Center for Public Policy Research.

The strength of the McClure Center is its collaborative and interdisciplinary approach. Dr. Katherine Himes is currently the director of the Center.

Former Directors of the McClure Center include:

  • Jean Henscheid (Jan. 2017 – June 2017)
  • Priscilla Salant (Jan. 2014 – Dec. 2016)
  • David Adler (Aug. 2010 – April 2012)
